After Moses died (1405 BC), Israel gradually fell into apostasy. Deuteronomists stripped most Messianic references from the Torah in an effort to reduce that troublesome and controversial hope along with the perceived political threat for an occupying nation. Fortunately, ceremony and ordinances managed to endure relatively intact, despite the loss in depth of understanding. The complex and ambiguous nature of Isaiah’s words allowed them also to survive the culling. What remained was enough to allow the faithful the ability to recognize the Messiah when His life fulfilled prophecy and patterns from scripture and ordinances.
When John and Jesus opened a new dispensation in Israel (circa 30 AD) scripture was again added to the cannon, but the hierarchical Jews, benefitting from the entrenched institution, largely rejected the message. After Jesus departed, the apostles spread the good word, but Christians were aggressively persecuted, subjugated, and subverted. By 325 AD there was sufficient confusion among Christians that the council of Nicea was called, and a universal (i.e. Catholic) set of beliefs published.
In the 6th century God set His hand again among the children of Ishmael and provided additional scripture and direction through the prophet Mohammad, who first encountered the angel Gabriel in 610 AD.
The prophet Muhammad introduced law, order, and eternal truth to a people who were “deeply superstitious, with barbarous and ferocious customs, uncouth and degraded in their moral standards and conceptions. Life property and honor were constantly at risk, and tribes were always at daggers drawn with each other.” (1)
Muhammad did not attempt to garner personal glory for the transformative good the message wrought among the people. Instead, he is credited as saying, “I want neither wealth nor power. God has commissioned me as a warner to humanity. I deliver His Message to you. Should you accept it, you shall have felicity in this life and eternal bliss in the life Hereafter. Should you reject the Word of God, surely God will decide between you and me.”
After God’s message had been delivered and widely accepted, the Arabic world launched into a golden age of civilization and progress and was the center of scientific and medical knowledge. While medicine in medieval Europe was being sold snake oil while governed by superstition, Arabic doctors were performing advanced surgeries and using anesthetics.
Muslim (meaning “one who submits”) people attempted to take the new dispensation to the Christians who were descending into the Dark Ages. However, much like the Jews rejected John and Jesus in their day, 6th Century Christians rejected the Qur’an and Muhammad as an authorized messenger.
The Qur’an provided a means whereby faithful Christians could judge the new information by the light of the gospel that they already had (Qur’an 5:47). God’s word doesn’t change. So any new revelation could always be tested using existing scripture to verify validity.
Why does there need to be a test? Because:
1. God’s words never cease (Qur’an 18:109)
Say: “If the sea were an inkwell for the words of my Lord, the sea would be drained before my Lord´s words would be spent even though we brought the same again to replenish it.
2. Men will attempt to take God’s name in vain and claim their false words as His for profit and power (Qur’an 2:79)
So woe to those who write the book with their own hands and then they say: “This is from Allah,” so that they may purchase it with a little price! Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they have earned.
How should one discern?
Let, then, the followers of the Gospel judge in accordance with what God has revealed therein: for they who do not judge in the light of what God has bestowed from on high-it is they, they who are truly iniquitous
Qur’an 5:47
And if they are not the words of [God], judge ye, for [Allah] will show unto you with power and great glory that they are his words at the last day.
Say, “O People of the Scripture! You have no basis until you uphold the Torah, and the Gospel, and what is revealed to you from your Lord.” But what is revealed to you from your Lord will increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief, so do not be sorry for the disbelieving people.
A New Dispensation
Just as the first century Jews weren’t asked to reject the Torah in order to accept the Gospel, 6th century Christians were not being asked to reject the Gospel in favor of the Qur’an. Exactly the opposite. They were being called to repent and uphold both the Old (Torah) and New (Gospel) Testaments. Unless they studied and took seriously their own scripture, they would never recognize God’s voice in new revelation.
The pattern hasn’t changed. God still speaks and we are challenged and invited to authenticate His words using what He has already said. The consistency is profound. And when His words are laid out together, there is greater understanding because gaps are filled in.
Why was the Qur’an necessary in the 6th century? Because conspiring men, seeking power and profit, altered the Christian record, just as the Deuteronomists had done centuries before with the Torah.
Jews will argue that the Torah hasn’t changed. Has it?
Christians will argue that the Bible hasn’t changed. Has it?
Changes would be obvious to a people who memorized the word and wove it into their very fabric; songs, poems, art and culture. Rather than making wholesale changes that would be immediately detected and rejected, parts were quietly removed. Absence is harder to perceive. A few remnants remain as evidence that this took place. For example, the Chronicles of David, the Book of Gad, the Book of Jehu (to name a few) are referenced explicitly, yet these books are all missing in the compiled history.
An ancient record written prior to the Deuteronomist’s alterations and translated in the 1800’s explained, “For behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away. And all this have they done that they might pervert the right ways of the Lord, that they might blind the eyes and harden the hearts of the children of men.”
For faithful Muslims the same invitation stands. Uphold the Qur’an is key in discerning the voice of Allah in words He has spoken to other people.
Consider the following verses from the Qur’an juxtaposed with New Testament verses including those from the Book of Mormon, written between 600 BC to 400 AD and translated in 1830 by the power of God.
The Word
Behold! the angels said: “O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah
And the same Word was made flesh and dwelled among us. And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
The King
Say: “I seek refuge with the Lord of people,
The King of mankind
Exalted is God, the True King. Do not be hasty with the Qur’an before its inspiration to you is concluded, and say, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
And the Lord of Hosts, the King of kings, even the King of glory shall come unto you, and shall redeem his people, and shall establish them in righteousness. Selah.
Psalms 24:2
For I the Lord, the King of Heaven, will be their king, and I will be a light unto them for ever that hear my words.
The First & the Last
He is the First and the Last, and the Outer and the Inner, and He has knowledge of all things.
Hearken unto me, O Jacob, and Israel my called, for I am he: I am the First, and I am also the Last.
I am the first and the last, I am he that lives, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for ever, Amen, and have the keys of hell and of death.
Judge of the Dead
On that Day, the Kingdom will belong to Allah. He will be the Judge between them: So those who believe and do righteous deeds will be in Gardens of paradise.
I soon go to rest in the paradise of God until my spirit and body shall again reunite and I am brought forth triumphant through the air to meet you before the pleasing bar of the great Jehovah, the Eternal Judge of both quick and dead.
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing in his kingdom
وَيَجْتَمِعُ أَمَامَهُ جَمِيعُ الشُّعُوبِ فَيُمَيِّزُ بَعْضَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْضٍ كَمَا يُمَيِّزُ الرَّاعِي الْخِرَافَ مِنَ الْجِدَاءِ;
When the Son of Man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he shall sit upon the throne of his glory. And before him shall be gathered all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides sheep from the goats: the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.
Light of the World
Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth; a likeness of His light is as a niche in which is a lamp, the lamp is in a glass, (and) the glass is as it were a brightly shining star, lit from a blessed olive-tree, neither eastern nor western, the oil whereof almost gives light though fire touch it not– light upon light– Allah guides to His light whom He pleases, and Allah sets forth parables for men, and Allah is Cognizant of all things.
Qur’an 24:35
And the Light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame, and shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day, and shall consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, both soul and body.
For behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled. I am the light and the life of the world. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
He will raise the dead
And because the Hour will come, there is no doubt thereof; and because Allah will raise those who are in the graves
Qur’an 22:7
He brings the living out of the dead, and He brings the dead out of the living, and He revives the land after it had died. Likewise you will be resurrected.
Know ye that ye must come to the knowledge of your fathers, and repent of all your sins and iniquities, and believe in Jesus Christ — that he is the Son of God, and that he was slain by the Jews, and by the power of the Father he hath risen again, whereby he hath gained the victory over the grave; and also in him is the sting of death swallowed up. And he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead, whereby man must be raised to stand before his judgment seat.
لأَنَّهُ كَمَا أَنَّ الآبَ لَهُ حَيَاةٌ فِي ذَاتِهِ كَذَلِكَ أَعْطَى الاِبْنَ أَيْضاً أَنْ تَكُونَ لَهُ حَيَاةٌ فِي ذَاتِهِ;
لاَ تَتَعَجَّبُوا مِنْ هَذَا فَإِنَّهُ تَأْتِي سَاعَةٌ فِيهَا يَسْمَعُ جَمِيعُ الَّذِينَ فِي الْقُبُورِ صَوْتَهُ;
Truly, truly I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they who hear shall live. For, as the Father has life in himself, so has he given to the Son to have life in himself, and has given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of Man. Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming in which all who are in their graves shall hear his voice and shall come forth — they who have done good, in the resurrection of the just, and they who have done evil, in the resurrection of the unjust; and shall all be judged of the Son of Man. For as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just. For I can of my own self do nothing, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who has sent me.
Son of Mary
They [the unbelievers] disbelieve those who say, “God is the Messiah the son of Mary.” But the Messiah himself said, “O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates others with God, God has forbidden him Paradise, and his dwelling is the Fire. The wrongdoers have no saviors.”
Qur’an 5:72
Behold, I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you: that I came into the world to do the will of my Father because my Father sent me. And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross.
3 Ne 12:5
Who took Jesus’ life?
And for their boasting, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him.
For this reason does my Father love me — because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life and have taken it up again; therefore, repent and come unto me ye ends of the earth and be saved.
His Word is Unchanging
Perfected is the Word of thy Lord in truth and justice. There is naught that can change His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower
Qur’an 6:115
What I, the Lord, have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself. And though the heaven and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by my own voice or by the voice of my servants it is the same. For behold and lo, the Lord is God and the spirit bears record, and the record is true, and the truth abides for ever and ever. Amen.
In Conclusion
The Messiah was forward looking in the Torah, but after the Deuteronomist purge only a handful of references remained. Both the New Testament and Qur’an identified Jesus, son of Mary, as the Messiah.
Because the words of the Lord cannot be spent, the faithful can only conclude that our unchangeable God speaks still. Additional words claiming to be His ought to be weighed. Allah’s invitation applies today just as it did in the 6th century:
Let, then, the followers of the Gospel judge in accordance with what God has revealed therein: for they who do not judge in the light of what God has bestowed from on high-it is they, they who are truly iniquitous. (Qur’an 5:47)
Anyone can receive more of Allah’s word and remain in submission to Him.
